Since being taken hostage, Gilad Shalit has been kept in Gaza incommunicado where he does not enjoy basic rights according to the 3rd article of the Geneva Convention. Neither the International Committee of the Red Cross nor any other humanitarian organisation has succeeded in having any news on his condition.

Following the encouraging reconciliation pact between Hamas and Fatah, and as proof of the good faith of this new agreement, the release of Gilad Shalit could contribute decisively to constructive negotiations aimed at long-lasting peace in the Middle East. Trust-building between Israelis and Palestinians is an essential part of the peace process leading to two states living side by side in peace and security. The release of Gilad Shalit will help to create a constructive atmosphere.
