This week in Strasbourg it was voted the Progress Report on Turkey 2009. Mario David has done an explanation of vote on this vote, which you might find on the following paragraphs.

It is absolutely understandable that the political, economic and cultural elites from Turkey want their country to become a full member of the European Union.
But it is certain that we are not going to change our values and rules, which are widely known, to harbour whoever. So it is only up to any country to change it once it has became a member. Only then!
In the whole process of negotiations going on, the Turkish citizens have the uncomfortable feeling that we are imposing our values and rules, that violate their traditions and cultural heritage, and that in the end of the process, even if the negotiations conclude successfully, their membership will be denied by the Referenda that will occur in some EU countries.
Turkey is a friendly nation, with a very rich history and culture. It is our partner in NATO and deserves a fair treatment.
This is why we suggest that a referendum takes place in Turkey, asking its citizens if they want to join a Union based in our values and rules or if they prefer, as from now onwards, to start negotiations for a new and deepened privileged partnership.
