The Member of the European Parliament and Vice President of the European People's Party participated on the debate held yesterday on the European Parliament in Strasbourg about the recent elctions on Ukraine. This was his speech:

Five years after the Orange Revolution, the Ukrainians seem to look to this period as a lost opportunity.
And the political elites are not the only ones to be blamed.
It´s quite certain that they were too busy with quarrels of power and internal influences. That many needed reforms were not done nor implemented.
It’s inconceivable in any democracy that the electoral laws are changed in between two rounds of voting!
This doesn´t dignify those who proposed, voted and promulgated them! And it shows the nasty intentions of those who thought of them!
There is a lot to be changed on the lack of independence of the judicial system, influenced not only by the political power, but also by the economic agents.
Without a free and independent justice there is no rule of law, human rights are not guaranteed; there is no foreign investment, no progress.
But the European Parliament, and in particular some Member States are also to be blamed for this disenchantment.
I would like to ask any EU citizen to think, for a second, that if he or she was a citizen of a European country that, for any fate of History, was not a member of the European Union.
What would you expect from this Europe? In a word: solidarity!
But many Chancelleries simply not want to annoy or displease Moscow and therefore used and abused on the permanent fights in Kiev to avoid saying that Ukraine is a sovereign and independent country.
And therefore, if that is the will of its people and if they accomplish the necessary criteria, Ukraine can aim to become a full member of the European Union in the future.
